WHAT IS THE SUZUKI METHOD?
And is it right for me?
Dr. Shinichi Suzuki based his method of teaching the violin on the way children learn their native tongue (or, Mother Tongue). The elements of the Mother Tongue method are:
• Individualized instruction: quality time with caregivers (one-on-one lessons with caregiver as home teacher).
• The Suzuki Triangle. A perfect balance of respect and partnership between teacher, student, and home teacher.
• Community emersion: Group class (in addition to private lessons) and listening.
• Repetition: many small skills repeated that build into a fluid and deep understanding of the instrument.
The Suzuki Method is right for you and your little if the child is under 8 years old, and you are interested in helping your child to be a good musician, and a well-rounded person. No previous musical knowledge or experience is necessary for the caregiver or the child.
Children older than 8 (and adults, too!) can learn to play the violin, but the process might be adjusted to their age, much like learning a second language is taught differently than their first.
